Music

Music has always been a significant part of my life, evolving from a childhood hobby into a lifelong passion. Under the influence of my grandma, I began learning to sing and read sheet music at a very young age. She was a talented multi-instrumentalist who played the accordion, Pipa(琵琶), Zhongruan(中阮), and Yangqin(扬琴). When I entered primary school, she chose Erhu(二胡) for me to learn. This beautiful instrument accompanied me throughout my entire primary and middle school years.

After entering college, I joined an SATB choir, singing as a Soprano. I really loved singing together with my friends anytime and anywhere—whether on a rainy night or under the spring flowers. We spent a lot of time talking about music, which helped me understand how to interpret and perform it better. What’s more, my friends and teachers slowly guided me into the beautiful world of classical music.

After starting my PhD, I joined the Peking University Chinese Orchestra as an Erhu player. Playing in a large ensemble was an eye-opening experience. It taught me how an orchestra operates, how different instrumental sections coordinate seamlessly, and gave me deeper insight into the compositional logic behind large-scale symphonic works.
